Elk hunting with friends and living in a wall tent for a week has always been an enjoyment that is looked foreword to even as we are breaking down camp for the season. To say we rough it would be far from reality. The tents have electric lights, we have showers and wood stoves. Oh, and the tents all have wall to wall carpeting. Pretty much like home. We even are lucky enough to have a Chef that hunts with us. Dinners are always the high point of the day.
So how did I pick up the moniker of Dogman? Well as I said, "It happened on a nite dark and dreary". I had left my tent to go over to the dining tent for a late dinner during a tremendous down pour and electrical storm. The winds were shaking everything and the thunder deafening. I had left a lantern on so I could see my way back as it was so dark you could not see the ground.Pretty much normal for a late season Elk hunt. When I had had enough of the great food and good company I headed out for my tent and to settle in for the night. Good wall tents are a life saver. Mine is made by Kwik Kamp. I stumbled my way to the tent and zipped open the door to go inside. As I went inside my flashlight picked up a movement on the far end on the floor. There was a HUGE black object laying on the floor. As I backed out of the tent I was unsure what the thing was. My first thought was that it was a small black bear. I stuck my head back in the door and shined the light on the large lump again. It raised its head and then I realized it was a dog. About a 150 lb. dog. I went inside and decided it had just tried to find some shelter from the storm. My sleeping bag was soaked from him laying on it and then he had laid on the floor. I went out to get a couple guys and then one of them remembered the dog from a camp about 1/2 mile down the road. So we re-united him with the owner and from then on I was known as Dogman. This post is dedicated to my loving wife for the help she has given me on this site. May your hunts be as fun and enjoyable as ours.
